Yuri Norstein, Moscow
Biography
After graduating as an animator at the Soyuzmultilm Studio Film School, Yuri Norstein collaborated on over 50 projects. He has made his own films as director, animator and scriptwriter since 1968, including ‹Hedgehog in the Fog› and ‹Tale of Tales›. Since 1981 – subject to long interruptions
– he has been working on an adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s ‹The Overcoat›. Norstein left Soyuzmultfilm in 1989 after the studio management stopped production of The Overcoat. Between 1979–1996 he taught at the Faculty for Animation Film Direction at the University for Screenwriters and Directors in Moscow. In 1991 he established his own studio. As a director, Norstein has been awarded over 30 international prizes at festivals including Zagreb, New York, Montreal, Tampere, Annecy, Teheran, Panama, Melbourne, Espinho, Sydney, Ottawa and Moscow. Based on a poll of the American Film Academy in San Francisco and ASIFA Hollywood in 1984, his ‹Tale of Tales› was voted as the best animated film of all time.
